Recently, I stumbled upon something at a Japanese convenience store that immediately made my Y2K-loving heart skip a beat: Tanned Hello Kitty and My Melody Lolipop Chocolates!
If you grew up obsessed with 2000s Japanese Gyaru (Gal) culture, beach aesthetics, and retro Sanrio, this tiny convenience store find is an absolute dream come true.
🌺 A Surprise Y2K Discovery at the Convenience Store
While browsing the snack aisle at the local convenience store, a bright pink leopard-print display completely caught my eye. Fujiya (a famous Japanese confectionery brand) released a limited “Tanned Series” (日焼けシリーズ) for their iconic Hello Kitty & My Melody stick chocolates.
What shocked me the most was the sheer dedication behind this release: there are actually 8 different packaging designs available!
Seeing all 8 variations lined up in the store box was unbelievable. Fujiya really went all out for this collaboration! Out of all the adorable options, I picked my favorite one to bring home for just 160 yen (about $1.00 USD).

💅 Peak Heisei Gal Aesthetics & Nostalgic Gyaru Slang
The design of this packaging is a masterclass in nostalgic 2000s Heisei Gal style. Tanned Sanrio characters wearing sunglasses, tropical hibiscus flowers, bright rainbow motifs, and neon pink leopard print—it completely captures the energetic aesthetic of Japanese youth culture from two decades ago.
What makes this snack even more legendary are the authentic Gyaru slang phrases printed right on the front:
“Agepoyo” (あげぽよ): Iconic 2000s Japanese slang used when you feel super excited, hyped, or thrilled!
“Isshou Nakako” (一生仲仔): A nostalgic term written in classic Gal font meaning “BFFs Forever” (Best Friends Forever).

After bringing it home, I flipped the packaging over to check out the little quiz printed on the back.
The back asks about the future dreams of both characters, and the answers were so cute and unexpected:
1. My Melody’s Dream: To open her own sweet shop / pastry bakery (お菓子屋さんになること) — Absolute classic and perfectly fitting for My Melody!
2. Hello Kitty’s Dream: To become a pianist OR a poet (ピアニストか詩人になること)
When I read Kitty’s answer, I couldn’t help but smile! Choosing either a pianist or a poet shows such a deeply artistic and soulful side of Hello Kitty. The fact that she couldn’t narrow it down to just one path—and chose two amazingly artistic dreams instead—makes her character even more poetic and charming. Why limit your dreams to just one, right?
💖 Why Small Japanese Sweets Bring So Much Joy
Inside the cute heart-shaped plastic tray were two adorable dark/milk and strawberry flavored chocolates molded perfectly into tanned Hello Kitty and My Melody faces on blue sticks.
It’s amazing how a simple 160-yen chocolate from a Japanese convenience store can pack so much storytelling, nostalgic Gal culture, and adorable character lore into one tiny package.
