If you love Japanese idol culture, Y2K fashion, or nostalgic retro aesthetics, you are in for a treat. Today, I want to share a very special treasure from my personal collection: the “Hello! Project 2005 SUMMER – Hello! Project Town” photobook.
This isn’t just a regular book; it is a perfect time capsule that captures the peak of early 2000s Japanese pop culture.
🧭 The Magic of “Digging” at Book Off
Recently, it has become so easy to just buy vintage items online through apps like Mercari. But honestly, nothing beats the excitement of going to a physical store and hunting for treasures.
I actually discovered this legendary photobook at Book Off (a famous Japanese second-hand bookstore) for only ¥250! The original price printed on the back is ¥1,300, so finding it for such a cheap price felt like a total miracle.
If I had just seen this on Mercari, I probably wouldn’t have bought it. The real magic of blogging and collecting is actually walking into a store, flipping through the old pages with your own hands, and instantly falling in love with the vibe. That is the true “digging” experience in Japan!
🎤 My Eternal Idols: The Legendary Members
Hello! Project (also known as Halo-Pro) is a legendary idol empire that has been around since 1998. When this book came out in 2005, most of the members were older than me. To my childhood self, they weren’t just idols—they were my ultimate, glamorous “cool older sisters” that I looked up to every day.
Flipping through these pages brought back so many childhood memories:
- Tsuji-chan & Kago-chan (W): They were my absolute idols growing up. Their energy, fashion, and chaotic cuteness defined my childhood imagination.
- Matsuura Aya (Ayaya): To be honest, when I was a kid, I didn’t fully appreciate how amazing Ayaya was because she was just too perfect and professional! But now that I am older, I am completely obsessed with her. I listen to her music all the time and I wish so badly that I could travel back in time to experience one of her live concerts in 2005.
- Hagiwara Mai (°C-ute): On the other hand, Mai-chan was actually younger than me. In this photobook, she was only about 8 or 9 years old! Looking back at it now, I can’t help but laugh and think, “Wow, what a wild and unbelievable era that was!” lol.

📸 The Ultimate Y2K Aesthetic: Low-Fi Vibes & Handwritten Doodles
What makes this specific book so unique is that it is a behind-the-scenes look at the famous “Hello-Con” (Hello! Project all-member concerts). Unlike today’s heavily edited, flawless K-pop style visuals, the aesthetic here is warm, raw, and completely “real.”
I absolutely adore the 2005 hair and makeup trends shown in these photos. The images have that beautiful, slightly low-resolution digital camera quality that feels so nostalgic and comforting today.
Additionally, the pages are filled with colorful handwritten notes, doodles, and polaroid-style layouts made by the members themselves. It looks exactly like an authentic Japanese Purikura (sticker booth) album or a school girl’s scrapbook from the mid-2000s. It’s pure Y2K inspiration!

🎧 How to Explore Hello! Project Today
While Hello! Project still holds amazing concerts today, they don’t really publish behind-the-scenes books like this anymore, which makes this a rare collectible.
Halo-Pro has a huge history and even has passionate fans overseas. If you want to dive into this world, I highly recommend starting with YouTube! Because of licensing and streaming availability, it can sometimes be tricky for international fans to find all the classic tracks on music subscription apps. YouTube is the easiest and most fun gateway to experience both the current generation and the golden Heisei era of Hello! Project.

💌 A Little Message From Me
Thank you so much for reading until the very end! 🪽
To be completely honest, I was born and raised in Japan, and I am not good at English at all! 😭 So, I am using translation tools to the absolute max to write these posts. But the internet is so amazing because it allows me to share my deep love for “KAWAII” culture and Hello! Project with people all over the world. It makes me so happy!
If you ever visit Japan or browse Japanese proxy sites, keep an eye out for these old Heisei photobooks. They are beautiful pieces of cultural history that will instantly make your room feel a little more retro and magical.
Let’s connect through kawaii culture! See you in the next post! 🩶
