If you love the “Aesthetic Home Cafe” (おうちカフェ) trend on TikTok and Instagram, you already know that ordinary square ice cubes just won’t cut it. To elevate your daily iced coffee or tea, switching to fun, themed ice shapes is the easiest way to bring that stylish cafe vibe right into your own kitchen!
Recently, I decided to try making star-shaped ice cubes using a super cute, pastel-colored silicone tray I found on SHEIN. While the results were incredibly adorable, I learned a few unexpected lessons along the way!
Here is my honest review, my drink recipe, and the crucial mistakes you should avoid when making your own star ice.
🛍️ The Tool: SHEIN Basic Living Star Ice Cube Tray
To get that perfect celestial look, I used the “SHEIN Basic Living 1pc Star Design Ice Cube Tray”. It comes in a lovely pastel pink color that instantly brightens up your freezer.

This was actually my very first time using a silicone ice tray, and I was honestly blown away by how amazing it is! Unlike rigid plastic trays where you have to twist and fight to get the ice out, this silicone material is incredibly flexible. You can just pop each star out from the bottom smoothly without breaking the sharp, pointy edges of the stars. It is so satisfying and easy to use!
☕ My Drink Choice & A Cute “Fail” Story
For my star-themed drink, I decided to make a rich, comforting royal milk tea. I used a famous Japanese store favorite: HOMER Royal Milk Tea Base (Sweetened), which I bought at KALDI Coffee Farm. This tea base is seriously delicious and highly recommended if you can find it in Japan!

As you can see in photo, the stars look so dreamy floating at the top of the glass! However, because I have a major sweet tooth, I added a bit too much milk to my mix. The drink turned out a lighter pastel color than expected, which accidentally made the clear star ice melt into the background a bit!
My Pro-Tip for Better Photos: If you want your stars to really pop and stand out on camera, try using black coffee, dark matcha, or straight black tea. Alternatively, you can color the ice itself by freezing fruit juice or milk instead of plain water!
⚠️ 2 Crucial Mistakes to Avoid When Freezing Star Ice
Making shaped ice seems foolproof, but after my first batch, I realized there is a specific technique required to make them look perfect in a drink:
1 The “Wobble” Warning: Because silicone trays are soft and flexible, they bend very easily when filled with liquid. When carrying the water-filled tray to the freezer, you must hold it perfectly flat and be extremely careful not to spill or tilt it!
2 Don’t Overfill the Water! This is the most important lesson I learned. If you put too much water into the star molds, the ice cubes grow too thick and become rounded on the top and bottom. When you drop a thick, rounded star into your drink, it becomes unstable and rolls over onto its side! Instead of seeing the beautiful flat star shape looking up at you, you will just see the thick edge of the ice. To keep the stars facing upward, fill the molds just below the brim so the ice stays flat and structurally balanced.
Summary: Is it Worth It?
Absolutely, yes! Even with a couple of learning curves, seeing stars floating in my morning drink instantly brings so much joy and texturizes a simple routine into a beautiful aesthetic experience.
If you want to recreate this look, you can look for similar silicone star trays on SHEIN, Amazon, or even your local 100-yen stores. Grab your favorite KALDI tea or coffee base, watch the water levels, and start brewing your own starry magic at home!
